Introduction
Located in Western Asia, has an area of 185,180 km2. It has a population of 16,906,283 people. Damascus is its capital and the epicenter of a civil war that have raged the country. 90.2% of the population practice Islam, and only about 10% of the population are Christians.
The Church
In areas controlled by Islamic extremists, Christians cannot express their faith publicly. In other areas of Syria, leaders of historic churches are targets of violence and extortion. Christians are sometimes kidnapped for ransom. Believers of Muslim origin constantly suffer pressure from their families, as leaving Islam is seen as a great source of shame. Despite the challenges they face, the Church in Syria shine like a light in the darkness of war.
